Last Man Alive

Day 1

I found this journal in a book store as I was walking through town, picked up a pen on my way out. God I feel like I've been walking around for years and not seen anyone. Anyone that's alive anyway. Anyway I've decided that since I've yet to find another person I'm going to keep a record of my "journey" in the vain hope that someone in the future may come across it.

I guess I should introduce myself to you, the lucky reader or finder of this journal. My name is Dan and was 20 years old when I was writing this. I just recently finished my first year at university, studying what? I don't remember.

As I said I feel like I've been walking for years, when in reality its closer to weeks. From one town to another searching, hiding and just staying alive.

It started just before Christmas. I was helping mum wrap presents for my little brother when Dad came bolting up the stairs saying we had to leave. There had been reports on the TV of violence just "happening" around the world, with no explanation.
It didn't concern me at the time. I wanted to get a good grade in my mid term exams so the outside world was just blocked out.

Our neighbours had were all packing their cars outside when we all crammed into ours. Marc, my little brother, asked why we weren't packing like everyone else. Dad only said that we didn't have time and that we didn't need any it where we were going.
That didn't stop mum grabbing some of the family photos and Marc grabbing his phone.

We drove and we drove until we came to a place that looks familiar. It was the old army base that Dad had worked at when I was little. It looked empty. Abandoned.

We crashed through the gates of the main entrance, in truth I think I could have probably pushed them down myself they were that rusty.

When we reached the main building we got out and proceeded to the room at the top of the tower. It looked like a control centre like you see at an airport. But everything was covered in plastic sheets. There were also guns stacked up in the corner.

Mum began to panic and asked Dad what was going on, he said that he'd been hearing rumours from his former colleagues that the reason why people had been acting so violently all over the world was because a secret test went wrong somewhere in Africa on primates where they were trying to evolve them at a faster rate with a retrovirus.

Mum of course didn't believe him, saying that he always loved conspiracy theories, even after he left the Army. Marc and I weren't sure what to believe. It sounded like a Movie plot or just something that you see on a game.

Dad asked us to hush down while he went over an old radio and turned it on and asked us to listen.
What came out really scared me.

"We can't contain the virus. It will spread throughout the populous within weeks. Projections estimate that worldwide the infection will reach its peaked in as little as 3 months. Orders are to evacuate the Heads of State first and then to save as many uninfected as we can. Over"
Dad Explained that it was a repeating transmission that was meant to be on a disused frequency. But this old equipment scanned through all the frequencies so he was able to hear it with this stuff.

Mum started crying. Marc just sat looking at Dad and I. Well. I went over to the window and asked what we're going to do.

Dad said that we're going to hold out here. Send out a distress call and wait for the army to come and get us.

I guess it was destined to fail really. We were in an old and neglected facility that had no real way of defending ourselves. I mean. The only person who knew how to use a gun properly was Dad and the 4 of us were no match for the a large group of these things.

We'd been there for about 6 days I think. We'd gotten into a routine of getting up early and keeping watch from the control tower for any movement. We hadn't seen anything. No cars, no planes, no helicopters and no people.

Its as if the world went dead.

In order to conserve water we had to take quick showers every other day. And we did it in pairs to be extra sparing. Mum and Dad took their shower in the morning. Me and Marc took ours at night.

There were only 2 beds as well. And for all the love I had for my brother I didn't love his twitching.

I miss him though. His smile. His laugh. The way he thought he could beat me in an arm wrestle when he'd been working out for hours. I'm by no means a big strong guy but a 20 year old will always beat a 13 year old.

That night as we were all sleeping, well except dad. He was taking the night shift that night. When we heard a gunshot which made us all jump out of bed. Dad told us to go to the safe room. Which was under ground.

To this day I question why we weren't in there to begin with. But I guess Dad wanted us all in the same place at the same time.

There was another gun shot so I looked at what he was shooting at and there were people.

No.

Not people.

These were animals. Sure they were clothes and have fancy jewellery on but they were black with dirt and dried blood. Their eyes completely white. I still have nightmares about them breaking through the huge steel door that was on the concrete wall around the control tower.

We heard shooting as we were running down the long dark corridor. Then the shooting stopped. And we stopped unsure of what it meant. We were only steps away from the safe room when we saw the shadows of people running this way.

Mum told us to get into the safe room. Marc first then me. And as I was going to grab her hand to pull her in she slammed the door on us and told us that she loved us both.

I don't really remember what happened next.

I heard running. Echoing. And screaming.

I tried to block it out as I held Marc covering his ears. We stayed there for at least an hour, maybe more. Before we came out to the cold and quiet.

I went looking for them both. Telling Marc to stay where he was. I couldn't find anyone. At all.

I ran up to the control room. There was blood everywhere and on everything.

I just, stood there. How could my world have gone so wrong. Last weeks I was preparing for an exam. Preparing for a future that no longer exists.

I remember a hand slipping into mine as a stood there. Looking down I saw those blue eyes looking up at me. I knew there was nothing else left in his world except me.

The light is starting to get low. I'll continue this tomorrow when I find a place to sleep.
Heres a Story i'm going to be writing
this is sort of the introductory piece so you know who the person is and what's going on.
